Christmas Carols 2024

Date: 22nd Nov 2024 Author: Robert Weston

1st Lifton Scout Group enjoyed their annual Christmas Carol service on Monday 16th December at St Mary’s Church (the parish church of Lifton). The service was led by Revd Phillip Conway, who reminded everyone of the Christmas story and explained the significance of the Moravian star on display in the church.

Before the service began, the Group Scout Leader and Chair of Trustees received a cheque from Tesco on behalf of the group. This £1500 grant has been awarded for the group to use for new camping equipment. We are grateful to Laura Cooper, one of our Cub Leaders, who made the application to Launceston Tesco.

At the carol service it was great to have Squirrel Scouts, Beaver Scouts, Scouts and Young Leaders joining together in song. In total we are a Scout Group with over 110 young people and over 25 adult leaders.

During the carol service, thanks were expressed to all the leaders and trustees who give their time and energy to enable young people to learn new skills and grow as members of a team. Each and every volunteer brings a wealth of experience. We also recognised the long service of some of our leaders, including Mel Weldon who has served for over ten years. After the service more awards were presented including the Award of Merit for Sandie Gumbrell, the Chief Scout’s Commendation Award for Mark Guy and Rob Gumbrell. In addition, Claire Chalk has been awarded the 20 year service award.

Once again we are grateful for the donation of delicious mince pies by local business, Foxcombe Bakehouse. The support of local people and businesses is a real blessing for the group.
